A 21-year-old man was stabbed in the chest with a knife in an unprovoked attack by a gang, writes Rebecca Smith.

The man and his friend were walking along Bath Street, Abingdon, when four men and a woman launched the attack. A passer-by tried to intervene.

Both men were assaulted and the 21-year-old man received a ten-inch wound to his chest. He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, but allowed home after treatment.

DC Chris Hand of Abingdon CID said: "This was an unprovoked attack on two people who were lucky not to be more seriously hurt.

"We would like to hear from anybody who witnessed the assault but would really like to hear from the man who tried to help."

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident at 3am on Saturday especially a man in his 30s or 40s who tried to help.

The offenders were two white men, two men of mixed race and a white woman. They were all in their late teens or early 20s.
