Road safety minister Lord Whitty has received a 'manifesto' from the Institute of Advanced Motorists which is calling for a comprehensive review of speed limits, writes David Duffy.
The IAM, with more than 100,000 members, has put its suggested Labour election manifesto pledges in order of priority. It is not calling for the 70mph motorway limit to be raised.
Bryan Lunn, IAM chief examiner, said: Our members, who have all passed the advanced driving test, say speed limits at any given point must be realistic. Otherwise they lose the support of drivers.
Mr Lunn said all the cars at the recent British International Motor Show, in Birmingham, were capable of speeds well in excess of the national speed limit.
