A town is bracing itself for a historic military invasion.

Members of the Crimean War Society will stage a display of vintage weaponry on Saturday, followed the next day by the arrival of enthusiasts dressed in authentic English and Russian period uniforms.

The event - which commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Inkerman - coincides with the return to the town of a collection of military pictures depicting winners of the Victoria Cross. The Lord Wantage Victoria Cross exhibition, at the Masonic Hall in Alfred Street, features copies of 46 works by the painter Chevalier Desanges, donated to the town by Lord Wantage 100 years ago.

The displays will take place at the Masonic Hall between 10am and 5pm on Saturday, and 11.30am and 5pm on Sunday. The free picture exhibition runs until November 26.
