The Government has given the green light for Regional Independent Media's titles to be sold to Gannett, which owns the Oxford Mail, or to Johnston Press or Guardian Media, writes David Duffy.

Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers, publishing the Competition Commission's report into the proposals, also consented to the transfer of several of RIM's North West newspapers to Trinity Mirror without a probe by the commission.

Mr Byers said: "The Competition Commission has considered thoroughly the effects of the transfers on the accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion, concentration of ownership, prices, quality, consumer choice, efficiency and employment.

"I accept its unanimous conclusion that the transfer of the RIM titles to Gannett, Johnston or GMG may be expected not to operate against the public interest."

He said the Commission found no evidence to doubt the commitment of the three to maintaining editorial freedom or accurate reporting.

Regional Independent Media, the privately-owned Yorkshire Post parent company, was formed from the 360m buy-out of United News and Media's regional portfolio over two years ago and owns 101 titles, including the Sheffield Star, Lancs Evening Post and Blackpool Gazette.
