Villagers were shocked at the sudden death of a French-born barman who had lived in Blewbury for nearly two years.

The body of Eric Catry, 36, was discovered on Monday by a friend who is believed to have called at his accommodation in South Street, Blewbury, to collect him for a doctor's appointment.

Mr Catry was employed at The Load of Mischief pub where landlord Tony Vaks said: "Eric had been unwell for some time.

"We are naturally very shocked at his death at such a young age."

Oxfordshire Coroner Nicholas Gardiner was informed and a post-mortem examination was due to take place this week, although it is understood there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Catry had worked at The Load of Mischief for a year and before that worked as a barman at the Blewbury Inn. Both landlords described him as having a very experienced background in the hotel and catering industry in this country and abroad.

Mr Vaks said: He was well trained and very qualified. Off duty, he enjoyed good food and a bottle of wine, but largely kept himself to himself.
