Campaigners fighting a mobile phone mast in east Oxford are celebrating victory after the plans were ditched.

Mobile phone company One2One has withdrawn its application to put a mast in Manzil Way, off Cowley Road. The site was near a children's play area and hundreds of homes and businesses. Campaigners, who included the city's Green Party, and pressure group Campaign Against Masts in East Oxford, were concerned about the health risks from the radio waves it would have emitted. Oxford City Council had been inundated with letters expressing concern about the dangers of siting mobile phone masts in the city, and there had been seven letters objecting to the one in Manzil Way.

One2One officials are holding talks with council officers to decide where to site another mast, but no planning application has yet been submitted.

One2One spokesman Gill Kerr said: "We have withdrawn the planning application because the area is marked for regeneration. We are not sure what the plans are for that area. It would seem sensible not to use that site if the land use is changing.

"Our agents met the city council and decided to withdraw the plans," she said, adding that the company adhered to tight restrictions recognised by the World Health Organisation when installing masts.

Xanthe Bevis, Green Party member and former city councillor for the area, said: "Scientific information so far is that there is very likely to be a risk to people who are close to a mobile phone mast - particularly children."
