A college's plans for a new accommodation block and lecture theatre have been considered by city councillors.
But the application was put on hold because it strays on to Oxford's Green Belt.
Architects acting for St Catherine's College in Manor Road, Oxford, have now been asked to re-consider their plans. They suggest that their car park could be a better location.
While members of the city council's planning committee welcomed the designs submitted for 141 student rooms and a 100-seat lecture theatre, they expressed doubts about the exact location for the development.
Labour councillor Colin Cook said: "We should not be allowing colleges to degrade the environment by encroaching on the Green Belt when they could use their car park."
