An Oxford college has been given the go-ahead to build a temporary replacement for its historic boathouse.

The boathouse, constructed in 1881, was destroyed by fire last September. An investigation into the suspected arson continues.

University College owns the boathouse, which was also used by other colleges including Somerville, St Peter's, Linacre, Wolfson and Lincoln.

City council conservation officers say the building is of such historic importance that they would like to see it completely rebuilt.

University College submitted plans for a temporary boathouse on the bank of the River Thames below Donnington Bridge.

The new structure will only be used for storing boats and will be constructed from metal and painted green.

Chairman of the planning committee, Cllr John Goddard said: "We need a very good boathouse here, but in the meantime we are prepared to put up with an agricultural-style building."
