Oxford University Drama Society perform the musical thriller Sweeney Todd Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Oxford Playhouse from tomorrow until Saturday, writes Chris Gray.
Much wronged in earlier life, Sweeney returns to the East End to wreak a horrendous revenge on his past tormentors, with his accomplice, Mrs Lovett, proprietor of the worst pie shop in all of London.
Based on Hugh Wheeler's book, Stephen Sondheim's interpretation of the 170 year-old legend of the demon barber was a landmark in musical theatre, winning eight Tony awards. His portrayal of the Sweeney legend portrays a disturbingly human array of grotesques, alongside rousing songs.
