Oxford Hawks failed to build on their good form from last weekend and lost 2-1 at home to Peterborough in English League Division 2.
After a delayed start, Hawks played a patient game for most of the first half but failed to convert any of their chances.
Peterborough, on the other hand, converted two out of three of their first-half shots to go into the break 2-0 up.
They could have gone further ahead when a chance one metre in front of keeper Chris Boyle was cleverly lifted over him but he somehow managed to complete a high-class reaction save.
In the second half, Hawks had the better of the chances but failed to convert until Pete Swainson finally picked up a rebound off the Peterborough keeper to give Hawks some hope.
They could have forced the equaliser with five minutes to go when the ball fell to the evergreen Simon Dawson on the penalty spot, but he hesitated and the Peterborough defence cleared.
Oxford University recorded their first league victory of the season with an excellent 2-0 win at mid-table Formby.
Goals from Fulford after 23 minutes and Mayer on 41 brought the students a vital triumph because Bromley and Hounslow & Ealing, also struggling at the bottom of the table, also won.
Hawks 2nd recorded a 5-0 away win against Fareham. Andy Brooks and John Kane each scored twice, while Ali McShane got one and Clive Rease missed a penalty stroke.
