Children are hoping to be awarded 500 to help buy equipment for a village playing field which currently lies empty, writes Roseena Parveen.

People in Wootton, near Abingdon, have applied for 500 from the Oxford Mail and British Gas Community Chest this week.

The Wootton Community Centre Management Committee is trying to raise a total of 21,000 to equip a recreation field next to the centre to provide 200 village children with a safe place to play.

The idea to develop the field, which is owned by the villagers and the National Playingfields Association, was dreamed up three years ago.

So far, about 15,900 has been raised towards their target. Once enough cash is found, new slides, a fireman's pole, climbing frames, climbing nets and ropes will be among the equipment installed.

A safe area for toddlers is also planned.

Diana McNeil, the vice-chairman of the Wootton Community Centre management committee, said: "At least 200 kids will benefit.

"We have nothing at the centre and the kids really need something.

"At the moment they have to go to Tilsley Park in Abingdon. There's nowhere appropriate in the village for them to play."

Stephen Chawke, of British Gas, said: "What a great benefit this could be for local children.

"We wish them well in the coming judging stages."

The closing date for applications is November 30.
