Police are still trying to establish the identity of a middle-aged man found dead in the Oxford Canal, writes Paul Warner.
One theory being investigated is that he may have been a jogger who slipped and drowned while running along the muddy towpath.
The body, dressed in a black sports top and jogging trousers, was discovered on Saturday morning near St Edward's Bridge.
The dead man was described as white and in his late 40s or early 50s. His body was spotted beneath the hull of a houseboat by a passer-by.
Police released details of the man in the hope that a someone might come forward to identify him.
A post-mortem examination is yet to be held.
A police spokesman said: "We're open to all possibilities as to what may have happened. If someone has lost a relative or knows of someone who hasn't come home, they should get in touch with us immediately."
The man was described as being 5ft 9in tall, of medium build, with short brown hair and a moustache.
In addition to his sports clothes, he was also wearing a pair of white trainers.
His body was found at 9.15am on Saturday, but police believe he may have fallen into the water the previous evening.
