Oxford Operatic Society brings the musical comedy Calamity Jane to the Oxford Playhouse this week, writes Chris Gray.
Adapted from the Warner Bros' film starring Doris Day and Howard Keel, Calamity Jane is packed with well-known musical numbers The Deadwood Stage, Windy City, Black Hills of Dakota and Secret Love .
Jo Mills plays the hard-bitten, gun-totin' heroine who tries hard to behave like a man but is constantly foiled by her all-too-womanly feelings. In an attempt to get the local saloon proprietor out of trouble she promises to bring a vaudeville star to Deadwood and succeeds in finding only a star-struck unknown.
Performances continue until Saturday at 7.30pm, with a matine on Saturday at 2.30. Telephone 01865 798600 for tickets.
