Jon Blencowe's first match in charge as Abingdon Town manager after a spell as caretaker boss ended in a disappointing defeat at Wingate in Ryman League Division 3 on Saturday.
But it could all have been so different if the visitors had taken one of the numerous chances they created before the home side went ahead.
As the first half wore on, Wingate & Finchley came more and more into the game, but even then, Abingdon still had the better opportunites to break the deadlock.
The game turned in a minute just before half-time when the home side scored twice. O'Neill netted at the near post, and within 60 seconds, Wingate were awarded a harsh penalty which Clive Wilson, the former QPR and Spurs player, dispatched.
The second half saw Abingdon penned back for long periods and it was no surprise when Wingate added two further goals to run out comfortable winners.
