Dean Parisot's fond lampoon of sci-fi series like Star Trek should even have the most ardent Trekkie smiling in self-recognition. Less aggressive and mercifully less scattershot than the Airplane! spoofs, the film actually borrows its premise from the Steve Martin vehicle, The Three Amigos, as the cast of a long-cancelled TV show are rescued from the humiliation of the convention circuit to help a peace-loving alien race (which has mistaken the programmes for historical documents) resist colonisation. The splendid ensemble hit the tone of playful earnestness from the off, with Tim Allen's swaggering commander (who believes in the myth every bit as much as the fans), Alan Rickman's frustrated Spock-like Shakespearean and Sigourney Weaver's blonde eye-candied sidekick all judged to perfection.
