Banbury United are hoping that Mickey Lewis's sacking at Oxford United could work in their favour.
The 35-year-old midfielder, who was unceremoniously shown the door at the Manor Ground after 12 years service as a player and coach, is already registered with the Dr Martens League club.
Lewis signed non-contract forms with Banbury earlier this season, and has played one game - the 2-1 defeat at Corby Town at the end of September.
Banbury player- manager Kevin Brock said: "He is signed on for us and I hope to be speaking to him over the next couple of days and see what the situation is because he may be more available.
"He played for us against Corby over there and did very well. It would be tremendous if we could get him involved."
But Banbury could face a battle on their hands as it's understood Oxford City are also keen to secure Lewis's services.
Manager Paul Lee, who declined to comment, is without an assistant following Andy Lyne's sacking at Court Place Farm three weeks ago, and Lewis would fit the bill perfectly as a player-coach.
