From: Mr. Brinckerhoff (Salt Lake City, Utah)
We get little news from the outside world. (By the way, how is that lovely PM of yours, Margaret Thatcher?)
However, the other day I ran across a story about Charlton Heston visiting
Oxford University. Now here's the odd part - someone gave him permission to give a public speech.
How could such a thing have happened? Please do not misconstrue anything this man says as carrying the backing of the U.S. public.
Oh, it is true that he speaks for a strong well-funded (if somewhat
misdirected) political lobby, but his views are at at odds with those of many Americans.
The man's opinions embarass me in my own provincial political arena - but
the fact that he is loose on the world stage mortifies me.
I am very sorry for any aspersions he may have cast your way. But can you
believe anything said by a man who claims he used to be Moses?
Then again, our country was lead for many years by a man who's prior greatest claim to fame was co-starring in a movie with a monkey. But co-starring with a monkey may be good training for a political career.
By the way - we still haven't decided on a new president. And I must say -
I rather like it this way. I'm sure there are many Britons who are envious
of our unique position.
Now if we can only get Congress and the Senate to a similar position. Of
course on the down side, we have nobody to blame for things that go wrong.
