Drivers who lust after the sizzling Type-R Accord but can't stretch their finances to buy one will be thrilled by Honda's new 1.8i VTEC Sport, which joins the Accord range next month, writes David Duffy.

Designed to turn heads in the car park as well as on the road, the Sport satisfies demand for a well-specified, cost-effective alternative to the 212 horsepower experience of the 140mph Type-R.

With 16in alloy wheels, body-coloured side sills and a rear spoiler, the 127mph Sport shares much of the visual punch of its race-bred relative but retains the afford- ability of the 1.8i S on which it is based.

The new 1.8-litre, 136 horsepower Sport is available in four- or five-door guise, priced at 15,495 or 15,645 on the road respectively.

Honda UK's head of corporate sales Nicholas Phillips said: "The new Sport adds even more charisma to the Accord range and provides a credible performance option below the Type-R.

"Building on the acknowledged strengths of the double What Car? Family Car of the Year-winning 1.8i VTEC S, it offers true individuality at an affordable price."

In addition to the exterior styling features, drivers will also enjoy a sports interior, pictured right. Titanium-look inserts and door handles, white Type-R style dials, a red-stitched four-spoke leather steering wheel and alloy gear knob are all standard.

A unique-fit CD/tuner stereo system completes the package.
