A teenage alcoholic was ordered to be detained for two years after hitting a bus passenger over the head with a bottle.
Oxford Crown Court heard that Christopher Philp, 18, of Barton Village Road, Headington, Oxford, got on a bus and started shouting abuse at Husyian Huban.
Nigel Daly, prosecuting, said Mr Huban had to be restrained by friends and then both men got off the bus.
As Mr Huban stepped on to the pavement Philp hit him with a bottle he had been drinking from. Mr Huban needed five stitches in a cut.
Philp was arrested and released on bail.
Mr Daly said that in a second incident, on January 3, Philp shouted abuse at his father who had been stopped by police while driving in Barton Village Road. He went on to verbally abuse officers, who warned Philp about his behaviour three times before arresting him.
Peter Ross, defending, said Philp had reduced his drinking to 70 units per weekend and knew his behaviour had been wholly reprehensible.
Philp admitted causing grevious bodily harm and using threatening words.
Judge Francis Allen said drink was no excuse whatsoever and ordered Philp be detained in a young offenders' institution for two years for causing grevious bodily harm.
He made no separate penalty for using threatening words.
