A lecturer became a Jekyll and Hyde character when he used the Internet to lure a 14-year-old boy to a hotel, a court heard.
Oxford University graduate Anthony Gray, 31, of Tamarisk Gardens, Bicester, allegedly met the boy on a gay chatline over the Internet and told him he was 22.
Greg Bull, prosecuting, said Gray arranged to meet the boy at Cardiff central station and booked a hotel room.
"Gray is a Jekyll and Hyde character who appeared to be an upright citizen but had deeper, darker motives for seeking out young boys," he said.
Mr Bull said the defence would say Gray was trying to help young teenagers who were deciding what their sexuality was. He claimed nothing at all happened in the hotel room.
Gray denies committing two serious sexual offences.
The case continues.
