Darren Patterson is hoping that his experience can help plug the gaps in Oxford United's leaky defence and help them pull off one of football's greatest escapes.
As reported in later editions of yesterday's Sportsmail, Patterson has joined Oxford on a free transfer from York, and trained with the team for the first time yesterday.
It is the first signing manager David Kemp has made since the departure of Joe Kinnear to Luton.
Patterson, a Northern Ireland international defender, goes straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to Bury, hoping to shore up a defence that has leaked 62 goals in 28 games.
And he insists that despite their plight, United can still beat the drop.
"I'm not going to say I'll bring this and bring that to the team because you get in all sorts of trouble when you do, but I'm going to give it 100 per cent because that's the type of player I am," he said.
"With Andy Scott and Phil Gray up front, we'll score goals, but from what I understand, the problem has been in defence and that is what I'm going to try and help put right.
"I'm 31 now a young 31 though and hopefully I can use my experience to help out the others and put things right."
