Anglo-American Stock Car Auto Racing (ASCAR) will thunder on to the UK motorsport scene this year with the promise of a 32-car train travelling at speeds of up to 180mph.

Borrowing from American-style stock car racing the sport that spawned a plethora of American racing heroes, super speedway tracks and an audience of millions ASCAR is poised to rock the UK with unrivalled motor sport entertainment at Rockingham Motor Speedway, Britain's latest motorsport complex.

Goodyear will be the sole tyre supplier to the series, which aims to deliver a new racing spectacle on purpose-built oval seated arenas in Britain and Germany.

Britain pioneered banked oval track motor racing at the infamous Brooklands circuit, which was initially built as a test track in 1907.

However, it was the Americans who grasped this concept in the 1950s with the construction of Darlington Super Speedway in South Carolina and Daytona Motor Speedway in Florida. Today stock car racing is the fastest-growing spectator sport in the US.

Closer to home, Rockingham Motor Speedway, near Corby, will become Britain's first all-seater motorsport stadium. ASCAR will officially open the track in May, promising thundering 565 horsepower, 6.0-litre V8 engines powering American-built stock cars.

The majority of flat-out bumper-to-bumper action will take place at speeds topping 170mph.

SCAR managing director Mike Schmidt said: "ASCAR will appeal to enthusiasts and families alike and is being developed with entertainment as the prime ingredient to ensure everyone gets a great show."
