Two witnesses have come forward and revealed they tried to save a man spotted in the river at Oxford over the weekend.
Police searches are continuing along the River Thames after reports that a man fell.
The man, who was wearing a dinner jacket, was seen in the water near Folly Bridge in the early hours of Saturday morning after passers-by heard a splash.
Police would like to contact a smartly dressed, slim white man seen earlier in Abingdon Road. He is described as being clean shaven, with short dark hair.
Det Insp Paul Emmings, of Oxford police, said: "It is important we talk to people in the area that night so we can attempt to identify the man seen in the river as soon as possible."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police on 01865 266333.
