A community centre that helps young families has been praised for the difference it makes to people's lives.

Steve Goddard, of Oxford East Liberal Democrats, spoke admiringly about the Donnington Doorstep after visiting its drop-in facility in Townsend Square, east Oxford, where parents can stop by with their children to use its services and have a meal. Mr Goddard said: "As a father of a five-month-old daughter myself, I know how important it can be to have access to facilities and, sometimes, to get help with childcare.

"Donnington Doorstep is a great example of a grassroots organisation which can make a real difference to people's lives."

Donnington Doorstep has run for more than 15 years and attracts parents and children from all over the city.

Its facilities include toys, a kitchen and toy and book libraries.

On a typical Friday, 180 people use the centre, which is funded from a variety of sources, including the city and county councils and through lottery funding.
