Keith tong, director of the Oxford Gang Show for the last seven years, is preparing to bow out.

For years he has directed the famous show, which is now in its 50th year, organising the 300-strong cast and the dozens of production teams involved.

His Gang show connections go as far back as 1966, when he was a cub in the production, then staged at the Oxford Playhouse.

This year's show, which is sponsored by the Oxford Mail, is to be staged at the Apollo Theatre, George Street, from March 12 to 17.

Mr Tong admitted: "It can be a very tense and lonely role, despite the number of people involved. I head one of the biggest Gang Shows in the country.

"In 1966 as a cub, the show's history and professionalism meant nothing to me. I can remember changing in Walton Street and having to walk up Beaumont Street in a clown costume and hiding under an umbrella."

Mr Tong went on to help backstage in 1972 and worked his way up to directing.

Dedicated to the core, he has even put up with the clash between the show and his wedding anniversary.

He joked: "That has caused me all sorts of grief."

Mr Tong has always tried to ensure the cast enjoy themselves and that resources are used efficiently.

Despite years in the business, opening night is always the same. Mr Tong said: "It is a multitude of emotions. It is the same for all of us, from me as the director to the youngest member of the cast."

Mr Tong said he hoped that handing over the reins to someone else would help keep a modern edge to the show.

He said: "It has been a very hard seven years as director with, I feel, successful shows as the result. I am sure there is still much more to come."
