A proposed new school should be moved further back from a dangerous road, the Vale of White Horse District Council has said.

Oxfordshire County Council plans to demolish the junior school in Newbury Street, Wantage, and replace it with a 14-class primary and nursery school.

There will be a playing field, hard play areas, car parking and landscaping of the site.

The school will be used by existing pupils at the junior school and those from Garston Lane primary and Church Street infants two schools which will be sold off and re-developed for housing and the money used to build the new junior school.

The plan also proposes road improvements outside the school and at the Newbury Street and Portway traffic lights junction.

Chairman of the Vale of White Horse District Council's planning committee Jerry Patterson said: "We are going to ask the county council to look again at their plans to see whether provision can be made within the site for children to be dropped off."

He said the council would not object to the school being re-sited further back, even if it meant the loss of trees next to the playing pitch providing the trees can be re-sited.
