A man was recovering in hospital today after what police described as a serious assault in Abingdon town centre.

The 28-year-old man, from Abingdon, who has not been named, is being treated in Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital following the attack last night.

Despite suffering facial injuries, and possibly a broken jaw, his condition today was said to be stable.

His suspected attacker, another local man aged 25, was arrested and detained overnight at Abingdon police station.

He was still in custody today.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the assault, or the circumstances leading up to the incident, which took place around 11pm, to contact them on 01235 556850.
