More than 300 German Michael Jackson fans are expected to swell the crowds when the star visits the Oxford Union.

The 42-year-old singer is visiting the union on Monday (March 5) with his new mentor, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach - who lived in Hinksey Hill before moving to the USA - where he will address students on the subject of child welfare.

Police, however, are warning that fans waiting to see the singer or welcome him to the union could be disappointed.

Sgt Chris Farmer, of Oxford police, warned fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the singer that they could be in for a long - and probably fruitless wait.

He said: "While we do not wish to be killjoys, the chances of seeing Mr Jackson or getting close to him are slim to say the least. As far as we know, he will not be stopping to talk to fans on the night and will be hurried into the union as quickly as possible

"If people do want to come down on the night they should be prepared for a long and probably fruitless wait."

Members of Germany's biggest Jackson fan club, Angel, say special buses are now being laid on for fans to make the trip.

Spokesman Jan Sonnentag said: "The Michael Jackson fan stronghold in Germany is proud to hail the King of Pop in Oxford in front of the public, together with fans from all over the world. Michael Jackson's fan community will, as always, be cooperative with the authorities."
