Distinguished scientist Jack Christian, husband of the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Maureen Christian, has died, aged 73.
Cllr Christian was with her husband when he collapsed on Tuesday at Oxford University's Material Science Laboratory, in Parks Road.
The cause of death is not yet known but it is thought Prof Christian may have suffered a heart attack.
Cllr Christian issued a statement saying she intended to continue as Lord Mayor.
On Monday, Prof Christian accompanied his wife to the town hall, where she presented Inspector Morse author Colin Dexter with the Honorary Freedom of the City.
She said today: "I have already had calls from friends and colleagues in America, Canada and Japan, offering their condolences. Jack had just finished writing a rather definitive book on material science and it is sad that he didn't live to see it published."
Prof Christian read physics at The Queen's College, Oxford, and went on to become a Reader in metallurgy, before being appointed a professor. He was a Fellow of St Edmund Hall.
