A district council's plans have left town councillors concerned about their role.
South Oxfordshire District Council's new chief executive, David Buckle, has said he intends to create a team of economic experts to promote the region's business interests.
They would formulate an overall business and marketing strategy, focusing on Wallingford, Didcot, Thame and Henley.
Mr Buckle hopes to have the team in place by the summer.
The proposal has been welcomed in principle by Wallingford Town Council.
But its members say they want to ensure they are fully consulted on business strategy and they are determined not to be overlooked.
Town councillor Nigel Moor told his colleagues: "Where do we stand? We should discuss with the district council whether one member of the new team could work closely with us. It need not be a full-time job, perhaps three days a week."
He stressed that an effective partnership would be crucial if the town was to attract all the available development grants.
Town clerk Andrew Rogers said he would take the matter up with Mr Buckle.
He said: "The nitty-gritty of how the district will liaise with us needs to be decided."
