Mike Freeman, pictured, and his Sheltie dog, Bruce, have been constant companions for more than eight years.

But Mike has to go into hospital for major surgery and he wants to find a temporary home for Bruce.

Mike, of Greenfields, Arncott, said: "He is a nice-natured dog and all he wants is someone to feed him and give him a walk."

Mike's appeal for a short-term home for Bruce is backed by vet Peter Ferens, of Bicester.

He said: "I would be willing to liaise with Mike and any people who volunteer to look after his dog. Bruce is about 13 to 14 years old and is a good-natured, clean and happy dog.

"Owing to his age, Bruce would not be a difficult dog to walk. I am sure Bruce would not do well in kennels for the time Mike is in hospital."

Mike, who is 60 on May 28, goes into an Oxford hospital for major adominal surgery in June. He could be in hospital for three or four weeks and would like to make arrangements for Bruce well in advance.

He said: "I will pay for all Bruce's food, any vets' fees and also pay someone for looking after him."

Mike, who is disabled, has been a musician all his life. In the early 1960s he was leader of The Swing Five, which was made up of Oxford musicians. After emigrating to Australia he was a member of The Rhythm Aces and The Rotary Connection with whom he also went to Las Vegas.

Anyone volunteering to look after Bruce can call Mike on 01869 249970 or Mr Ferens on 01869 252077.
