Samaritans in Oxford have received numerous calls from farmers in anguish about their future since the outbreak of foot and mouth.

Norma Savory, spokesman for the Oxford Samaritans, based in Iffley Road, said she feared the number of callers might rise further once the crisis was over and the issue received less media attention.

She said "That is when farmers and others will really begin to feel the toll.

"I could not say how many are necessarily suicidal, but of course we are not only here for people who feel that extreme. The crisis has affected people in different ways.

"There are people who feel it is almost too much for them to carry on."

Ms Savory said volunteers were there to listen and act as a sounding board. They could also direct callers to other help groups that are available.
