Stuart Armstrong scored twice as Blackbird Leys Sunday won the Morrells Oxford Sunday League Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Six Bells in a low-key final.
An almighty downpour 20 minutes before kick-off dampened down the Court Place Farm pitch and must have had the same effect on the players as both teams started as if it were an end-of-season kick-about.
After a lacklustre first half-hour, there was action at both ends before Bells broke the deadlock just before half-time.
Blackbird gave the ball away and a quick through ball put Lee Bolton clear on goal. The Blackbird keeper injured himself trying to challenge Bolton, but could not stop the striker rolling the ball into an empty net.
The replacement keeper had nothing to do before the half-time whistle sounded.
Blackbird came out for the second half with a far more determined attitude and equalised 20 minutes from the end when a long free kick was knocked on to Armstrong, who scored.
The game drifted away from Bells, but Blackbirds had to wait until extra time to seal the victory. Armstrong latched onto a long ball and was allowed to run though and fire home.
Magdalen Arms, runaway champions of Division 4, won the Jack Sadler Cup when they came from behind to beat Division 5 side Cowley Social Res.
After a lively, goalless first half, Cowley eventually took the lead. This seemed to sting Magdalen into life and they equalised through Mark Beechers and snatched the winner through Rory Barrett.
In the Premier Division, Star Wanderers took a long time to break down a resilient Masons Arms but they eventually won 5-0.
Mark Revill converted a 30-yard free kick just before half-time. Then Dave Morris netted twice in the second half, the second from a miskick.
Substitutes Marc Jordan and Jason Hunt completed the tally in the last ten minutes.
Star Royal rested several players and paid the penalty as AFC Jericho romped home 7-3 in their chase for the runners-up spot.
Mick Taylor, James Bradford, Danny Williams, Vic Armstrong, Colin White, John Malek and Dean Joseph netted for Jericho, with Ian Macaskill, Simon Tricker and James Green replying for Star.
Star Wanderers Res suffered a second-half reversal to lose 4-2 at home to White Horse in Division 2.
Wanderers led 2-0 at the break, through Alan Major and Jimmy Rossiter. But a brace from Paul Robinson and one each from Mark Pybus and Gareth Wiggins saw Horse to a 4-2 victory.
Arncott took at least 40 supporters for their final game in their Division 4 promotion challenge at Mansfield Road Res and it paid off as they snatched a 2-1 victory with goals from Malcolm and substitute Dean Barrett.
Midweek result - Div 4: Angel Witney Res 2, Roebuck 4 (M Scanes 2, G Rudman, C Barber pen).
