Six people, including two school pupils, have received framed certificates from Abingdon's out-going mayor, Lesley Legge, for their contributions to the life of the town.

Tom Garrud was honoured for his work with the Bridge Drop In Centre for young people, Edna Hole for her campaigning work to save the town's community hospital, Margaret Langsford for her part in the Millennium Miracle Project, which has raised nearly £50,000 for a poor Indian town, and Angela Ross for her work with the Abingdon Arts Festival.

Louise Heffernan, a pupil at John Mason School, and Florence Potter, of St Helen and St Katharine School, received special school awards for voluntary work they carried out for other schools in the town.

Mrs Legge said: "It is always difficult to give awards when you are aware that there are so many people who give so much service to the community."
