Crisis club Witney Town, who remain on the brink of folding, now appear to be at the centre of a takeover battle.

Chief executive Brian Constable revealed that he had received two offers for the Dr Martens League club, who are on the market for a reported £350,000.

However, he said that one of the bids was from an overseas party, who wants to buy the site and change the use of Marriotts Stadium from football.

Constable declined to reveal what the prospective buyer wanted the site for, but Witney's chief is known to be keen to see greyhound racing at the stadium.

He said: "There are two offers on the table at the moment and neither will be decided before June 1.

"One is a possibility of a board of directors being set up comprising local people.

"They want until the end of the month to decide whether they are going to take it on or not - that would be purely and simply with the football side of the stadium.

"The other one is a party who lives abroad and is interested in changing the use of the stadium from football."

Constable was expected to hold talks with the Dr Martens League yesterday, but these failed to materialise.

Witney's chief said: "There is no reason for me to tell the league anything because currently Witney Town are in that league and if somebody takes them over, I am quite happy with that.

"As far as I am concerned there will be no football played there until mid-July, so there are two months to decide whether the club is going to stay in the league or withdraw."

The league's annual meeting is on Saturday, June 9, when clubs will be expected to give a commitment that they will be participating next season.
