The festivities were a highlight of the St Andrew's School May Fair in Wantage.

The fundraising fun day is one of the best-loved events of the year for the Wallingford Street school. Organisers hope to have raised up to £2,000.

Yesterday's fair took place at neighbouring St Mary's School, on Ormond Road, and followed last year's celebrations marking the school's 50th anniversary.

As well as Maypole demonstrations and lessons, visitors were treated to a judo display, barbecue, golf putting competition, stalls and skittles. Youngsters also had a chance to try out the Oxford Mail bouncy castle.

The independent school caters for youngsters aged between three and 11, and shares facilities with St Mary's School. Cash raised will be used to buy extra computers, play equipment, and to fund sporting and educational trips.

Helen Wright, from the St Andrew's Support Group, said: "The event is the highlight of our fundraising activities and is always extremely popular with children and adults alike.

"Parents and teachers are working together to raise additional funds.

"We are trying to look creatively at things the children could benefit from that we wouldn't expect the school to pay for."
