The first non-British citizen to be awarded the title of Freeman of Oxford received the honour at a special ceremony in the Lord mayor's Parlour at the Town Hall yesterday.
Martin W-rlein,a solicitor from Nremberg, was put forward for the exclusive title by his father-in-law, Cllr Alan Pope, who is one of the city's existing Freemen.
Apprentices of Freemen and the sons or sons-in-law of existing Freeman can claim the title, which is held by about 300 people. The historic title gives holders various privileges, including the right to graze animals on Port Meadow.
Herr W-rlein, pictured above with Cllr Pope, said: "I have been looking forward to this occasion. I am very honoured that this family tradition can be continued."
Herr W-rlein married Cllr Pope's daughter, Susan, three years ago. The couple live in Germany and Herr W-rlein's family visited Oxford for the ceremony.
