Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan returned to his former Oxford college as part of an official visit to Britain.

The Prince started his visit yesterday with a tour of Merton College, where he met tutors and students.

He studied at the college for a post graduate course in 18th Century Thames Navigation between 1983 and 1985.

From Merton, he walked to Balliol College where he had lunch with the university Vice Chancellor, Dr Colin Lucas.

He was given a tour of the Ashmolean Museum in Beaumont Street by the director, Christopher Brown, followed by dinner at Merton in the college garden.

After spending the night at Windsor Castle as a private guest of the Queen, the Prince was due to return to Oxford today (Wednesday) for a walk in Merton College Garden and Meadow and lunch at one of his former student haunts, The Trout Inn at Wolvercote. This will be followed by a tour of the River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, where the Prince will sign a copy of the thesis he wrote for his course, which is held there.

An Oxford University spokesman said: "The visit to Merton College is a private part of the visit. The Prince was very interested in going along to his old college and in going to the Ashmolean."
