Trevor Brooking came on as a late substititute for Gary Lineker - and finished on the winning side at Magnolia Park.
Lineker was due to be the star attraction at Mark Lawrenson's Celebrity Charity Golf Day on Monday, but had to pull out due to contractual obligations.
However, his Match Of The Day colleague Brooking proved to be a more than adequate replacement.
The former West Ham star won the team prize with amateur partners, Magnolia Park owner John Walters, Peter Lockett and Des Boulter with a total of 79 points for the two best-ball stableford.
But they only won on countback from radio football commentator Ron Jones and his partners Tom Barrett, Doug Wood and Simon Tibbetts.
The long course, which was in immaculate condition, and some fiendish pin positions made scoring tricky for the field which included BBC sports presenter Steve Rider, and football personalties Ron Atkinson, Mark Bright and Oxford United's Mike Ford. Another ex-United boss, Jim Smith, was unable to attend.
The day raised more than £1,000 for the Sobell House hospice in Oxford.
"I hope this is the first of many such days at this frendly club," said Lawrenson, who is in fact a member of Magnolia Park, despite living in Southport.
"Unfortunately this year's event clashed with a couple of other dates including the Football League managers' dinner.
"Hopefully the field will be even stronger next year."
