Proposed increases to park-and-ride charges were due to be high on the agenda at a county council highways meeting today.
Oxford City Council last year proposed increasing parking charges at the city's park-and-ride car parks from 50p to £1, but Oxfordshire County Council highways officers said the proposal was unlikely to be approved because it would mean more traffic in the city centre, damaging the Oxford Transport Strategy. Last week, Corinna Redman, Liberal Democrat leader of the city council, proposed a "fall-back" position of an increase from 50p to 70p.
Today, Noel Newson, head of sustainable transport for the county council, said: "We think a a 60p charge would be more acceptable."
The county council is also being asked to consider meeting the costs of ticket machines at the Thornhill car park in Headington.
The city council is also seeking consent for increases in charges at Oxford's central area and suburban car parks.
Increased Sunday charges at car parks in the city centre are also being considered.
