Oxford United are being linked with Chesterfield's experienced striker David Reeves.
Reports from Derbyshire suggest the U's are making moves to try to sign the 33-year-old, who has scored goals wherever he has gone.
But Reeves has two years left on his contract, and would therefore cost a fee.
Although his age is against him, Reeves scored 15 goals last season in helping Chesterfield to win promotion to the second division - moving in the opposite direction to Oxford.
But their season was blighted by an FA investigation into irregular payments to players, and they had nine league points deducted.
United's new boss, Mark Wright, refused to comment about Reeves, but did say: "There are a number of players I am interested in and we are going to be connected with.
"But I'm not going to be rushed into bringing players in if either their fees or the wages they are asking are too high."
Throughout his career, Reeves has proved a quality finisher.
He hit three goals in ten league and cup starts for Sheffield Wednesday, and seven goals in three loan spells with Scunthorpe (twice) and Burnley, before joining Bolton Wanderers for £80,000 in 1989.
At Burnden Park, he weighed in with 42 goals in 142 starts.
Since then he has had moves to Notts County, Carlisle and Preston, before spending the past four seasons at Saltergate. In all, he has struck around 190 career goals.
*Oxford United have escaped punishment following the crowd trouble at their Manor Ground derby with Swindon in March when missiles were thrown onto the pitch.
Instead, the FA will monitor crowd behaviour at home games next season with an assessor regularly visiting the new Kassam Stadium at Minchery Farm.
