Oxford has been voted the fifth most popular short break destination in the country.

The city was pipped to a place in the top three Thomas Cook's 2001 Travel Awards by only London, York and Edinburgh, while Bath claimed fourth position.

The top reason for visiting was to take in the many cultural sights, with the city's rich heritage of college buildings, ancient churches and monuments attracting 85 per cent of the votes.

The second most popular pastime, gaining 33 per cent of the votes, was the chance to shop.

A certificate was presented to Oxford City tourism manager, Jan Hull (right in the picture), by the company's Westgate Centre branch manager, Sara McLeese.
