Witney Town Football Club's grand disco and dance night was voted a "big success" with police fears of late night noise and traffic problems proved groundless, say the organisers.

Hundreds of people paid £20 a ticket for the big party at the Marriott Stadium, Downs Road, on Sunday night. The event was staged to raise money for the club, which is struggling financially.

The party in full swing

The club's promotions manager, Roger Alder, said: "It turned out to be an outstanding success. We had a capacity of 1,000 and had to turn people away.

"There was no trouble. Everyone behaved themselves in the ground and outside. The environmental health officers were happy with noise levels, and even the police seemed happy with the way things went."

A police spokesman said: "We had no reports of any trouble at the ground or in the town."

The event - staged by roadshow nightclub Miss Moneypenny's - went ahead with the approval of the West Oxfordshire District Council's licensing sub-committee, despite police reservations. That led to a row between club chairman Brian Constable and Insp Derek Nation over comments he made in a letter to the committee.

Mr Alder said the event had made a "tidy profit".

He added: "We must generate cash from off-the-football-field activities and we need to organise more entertainment.

"What we shall do now is to sit down and talk with the district council, police and fire service about the way ahead for future events."
