Bowls fan Jim Tyler celebrated his 100th birthday at the club he joined 54 years ago.

He joined members of West Oxford Bowls Club based at Botley Recreation Ground, for a match on Sunday, the day after he turned 100.

The game was followed by a buffet meal and birthday cake decorated to look like a bowling green.

When Mr Tyler first joined the club he was the youngest member and now he is the oldest.

He was introduced to the game by his father, Jim, and there is a photo in the pavilion of both of them after a match with the other members.

His bowling triumphs have included playing for West Oxford Bowls Club against an England team three years ago shortly before his retirement from the game. He was club champion in 1969 and 1973 and served as president twice.

Although he has retired from the game, Mr Tyler is a life member of the club and still comes to watch the matches, even though he moved to Cheltenham to be near his daughter, Margaret, three years ago.

From 1983 to 1998, Mr Tyler lived in sheltered housing in St Thomas' Street, Oxford, but before that he lived in Oatlands Road, Botley, from 1938.

As well as the party at the club, he was also given a surprise family party in Cheltenham.

Mr Tyler said: "I like bowls because it is sociable as well as being a pleasure to play. You go out on the green and you forget all your bits and bobs."
