Three men from Oxfordshire have been arrested after a street brawl between gangs of Asian and white youths.

A 34-year-old from Abingdon has been charged with assaulting a police officer during the incident in Russell Avenue, Aylesbury, on Sunday night in which 60 Asians retaliated after a youth from their community was allegedly beaten up in a local park before.

He was due to appear before magistrates in the Buckinghamshire town today.

Shots were reportedly fired in the air by an Asian armed with a handgun, and bricks were hurled through the window of a house in the town where white youths, thought to be members of the far-right group, Combat 18, were taking refuge.

Detectives were today examining a 9mm bullet found embedded in an upstairs window frame of the house.

A 35-year-old from Wantage was also charged with assaulting a police officer. He will appear before magistrates on Thursday along with a 38-year-old man from Aylesbury who was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and a 19-year-old youth from Surrey, who was charged with resisting arrest. A 17-year-old from Thame was also arrested and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Four other white men, two from Birmingham, one from Hampshire and one from Slough were arrested and later released on police bail.

A 20-year-old man of mixed race was also bailed pending further investigations.

The brawl took place during a Bank Holiday weekend of racial violence which saw 500 Asians battling with police in Oldham.

Aylesbury mayor Raj Khan said he had heard reports that the white men were part of a National Front meeting.

Appealing for calm, he said: "We don't want anything bearing any resemblance to what is going on in other parts of the country.
