There were fireworks on and off the field as Banbury beat Loughborough by 113 runs in a controversial National Club Knock-out third round clash on Sunday.

The pyrotechnics on the field came from Banbury's powerful left-hander David Taylor, who hammered a spectacular 140 off just 108 balls.

Taylor was also at the heart of an incident that contributed to the match nearly being abandoned after the Banbury innings.

When he was on 54, Taylor skied the ball in the middle of the pitch. As he was sent back by partner Neal Radford, Taylor collided with Loughborough wicketkeeper Charlie Bloor just as he was about the complete the catch.

The Leicestershire side appealed for obstructing the field, but the umpires ruled the collision had been accidental.

This infuriated them, especially when Taylor then proceeded to hammer the bowling to all parts of their big ground.

He hit nine sixes, four of them in one over, and 13 fours. At one stage, he hit 35 off eight balls.

Taylor added 193 in 20 overs with Radford who hit 12 boundaries in his 74 as Banbury reached a formidable 268 from their 45 overs.

As Taylor left the field, not one of the Loughborough side clapped him.

It was at tea that Loughbborough discovered that, because they had bowled their overs so slowly, that they would be docked four overs from their innings.

This hardly improved Lougborough chairman Neil Davidson's humour and he launched a verbal assault at the umpires, who at one stage looked as though they were going to call off the game.

Tempers eased when Loughborough were given one of their overs back.

But they were never in the hunt and were bowled out for 155. So Banbury entertain Northants side Finedon in the fourth round on Sunday, June 10.

"Taylor's actions offended the sense of sportsmanship of almost everyone in the ground," said Davidson after the game.

Banbury skipper Neil Megson defended Taylor to the hilt. "The collision was a complete accident and that was the view of the umpires, otherwise they would have given him out," he said.

"What really incensed Loughborough was having the overs docked. Even if Taylor had been out for 54, it would have made no difference, as they weren't in the same league as us."
