A driver stopped the traffic on a busy road and smashed a car windscreen in a road rage attack after his wing mirror was struck by another car, a court heard.

Roger Hurley, who was driving a Maestro, overtook Jonathan Carter in a Peugeot on the A415 into Abingdon and stopped the traffic, before demanding that Mr Carter open his door.

Helen Waite, prosecuting, told Didcot magistrates: "Mr Carter feared for his safety and called police on his mobile before driving on and stopping in a nearby lay-by."

Hurley again stopped in front of him "and returned with a pair of molegrips with which he hit the driver's window and smashed it," she added. Police then arrived and Hurley was arrested.

Hurley, 42, of Lytton Road, Cowley, was sentenced to a six months' community rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to criminal damage to the Peugeot on April 19, and using threatening, abusive and insulting words and behaviour to Mr Carter. He was ordered to pay £200 compensation for damage to the car and £55 court costs.
