A thumping great yarn, the story of England's early attempts to colonise North America through Virginia.
Sir Walter Raleigh sent out Captain Arthur Barlowe and armadas on a reconnaissance voyage and within a few months of their return was named first 'Lord and Governor of Virginia'. Barlowe also brought back two natives, Manteo and Wanchese, who stayed at Raleigh's house in the Strand and caused a sensation. A settlement was established by John White who sailed home to organise provisions - but when he returned in 1590 no trace of the settlement remained. Amongst those missing were White's daughter and her husband and child. It remains a mystery to this day. Milton offers an intriguing solution.
