Detectives hunting the lodger of a former Oxfordshire woman who was found murdered at her home are investigating a possible sighting.

Peter Airey, 27, thought to be the last person to see Carol Evans alive, is believed to have been seen on a train.

The information was passed onto police after an appeal was made last week on the BBC's Crimewatch UK programme.

A woman called detectives saying she thinks Mr Airey was on the 8.33am Kings Cross to Hull train on Tuesday, May 15.

Det Insp Bert Deane, who is leading the enquiry, said: "I want to hear from anyone who took the 8.33am train that day and thinks they may have seen this man.

"He was wearing a dark coloured t-shirt with buttons at the neck and possibly jeans, but most importantly had blonde hair.

"It's very important that we trace Peter as he may have been the last person to see Carol alive. He could have information that is vital to this investigation."

Ms Evans, 40, left Oxfordshire in 1999 to live in Peterborough. Her body was discovered in an outbuilding at her home on April 24.

A post-mortem examination showed that she died from severe head injuries and could have been dead for weeks. Her mother Joyce Dee, 58, of Didcot, had reported her missing.

Mr Airey has not been seen since the body was discovered.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Operation Windermere incident room on 01733 563232 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
