JT/FOX Oxford Cheetahs made it five wins on the trot with a 46-44 victory at Saddlebow Road last night to stay top of the Sky Sports Eite League.
However, a shadow was cast over the meeting by a terrifying accident in heat eight.
Oxford's Lukas Dryml and Knights' Peter Karlsson came together on the first bend and both went hurtling into the solid fence.
Neither rider moved for some time and there was concern over their health. But, amazingly, Dryml was able to get up and walk back to the pits, although he took no further part in the meeting.
It was not such good news for Karlsson, who was taken to hospital with suspected leg and hip injuries.
The start of the meeting had been an absolute dream for Cheetahs, who provided the heat winners of the first six races.
A perfect maximum in heat six gave them a six-point advantage and they looked set to dominate the meeting.
Jason Crump stemmed the tide in heat seven with a win but with the Oxford pair packing the places, it was only a drawn heat.
Then came the fateful heat eight, which saw Ales Dryml, brother of injured Lukas, come out in the re-run and pick up the win.
Cheetahs pulled further ahead with another perfect maximum in heat nine to go ten points up.
However, the effect of that heat eight incident was to beginning to take its toll, and clearly the stuffing had been knocked out of the team.
Three heats advantages followed for the Knights in the next four races, which reduced the gap to just two points with two heats left to go.
But cometh the hour, cometh the man, and Ales Dryml emerged for his seventh ride in heat 14 to blister his way to his fourth win.
Steve Johnston, who usually rides King's Lynn so well, had not enjoyed the best of nights, but rode a very hard race to claim the second spot and ensure victory for Cheetahs.
The Knights claimed a maximum in heat 15 but nothing could dampen the Cheetahs spirits as they retained their position at the top.
